My brother is preparing to send their daughter, 4, back to school not because they feel ready, I am not sure any parent will for a very long time, but rather because they have noticed a distinct behavioral change in her.

The fact is our kids need to play, rough house, touch, and socialize with one another. There is a certain hubris in adults and specifically parents in believing that we shape their futures, and of course, to some extent, we do, but the bulk of their adult experiences are going to be formed by the interactions is adolescence within their peer groups. If we take this away from them because we are all afraid of some virus we are robbing them what it means to be a child.
