Friedman would suggest that if society wishes to value “purpose” they vote with their dollar and support companies that share those values. This naturally leads to the success (profitability) of those corporations. Friedman didn’t suggest companies always seek higher profits as some sort of support of blanket greed, but rather, they seek higher profits as they respond to the wants of society.

The problem we have in society today isnt a corporate problem, its a signaling problem from society. Everyone wants to talk big, but no one wants to change their behavior and induce corporations to change theirs.

Blaming corporations for the ills of today’s society comes from the same place as the drunk blaming the bar for his alcoholism. Its cop out. The only shared value left in this country…
