Convenient sure, cheaper? No way. Grocery stores basicaly giveaway produce because it rots on the shelves. The "cheaper and more convenient" trope are often used together because if someone suggests otherwise the user can pick one word rather than the other to argue their point.

Fruits and veggies are cheap. Flour is cheap. Eggs are cheap. Milk and bread, cheap. Lets teach people to cook and save the world.
